Pedobear Cosplay in California
Pedobear cosplay is an internet meme which became popular through the imageboard 4chan. As its name suggests, it is portrayed as a pedophile bear.The image was incorrectly described as a mascot among pedophiles, and cosplay participants dressed as the character were accused of being pedophiles, after the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department issued a warning that Pedobear was a sign of the presence of pedophiles and other people with inappropriate sexual behavior.
Internet memes are a part of the culture, and if you’re online, you gotta take the good with the bad, such as with Pedobear. Starting on 4chan, the bear mascot was originally meant to be a joke for when someone posts images that feature models of questionable age. Basically a visual 'Dude, really?’ measure for when someone is being just a little too interested in that loli, though it’s spread since then. The San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Department has issued a warning to parents in the area that Pedobear sightings have been popping up, which may mean something or other. In the warning, the police caution that pedophiles have adopted the bear as their mascot, and that while no one in their immediate area has been walking around in a bear costume, there have been recent sightings of the infamous character appearing at conventions and car decals in southern California recently. Leaving bloggers confused on if this was just poor judgment or stupidity, the sheriff’s department has confirmed that while they are aware of the character being a stupid internet meme they are still taking it seriously enough to issue a two page color information flyer. Because up until this point, a man walking around in a weird Japanese bear costume at any place OTHER than a convention wouldn’t have been suspicious in nature at all.
